Rat Control – Start the Process Today!
Rodents often carry diseases, and rats and mice can also cause damage to your building. Rodents frequently raid trash bins, citrus trees, garages and vegetable gardens. They often chew through electrical wiring and wood. This can expose the wire and increase the danger of a house fire. By some estimates, as many as one quarter of all house fires in the U.S. are caused by exposed wiring due to rodent damage. Needless to say, rodents relieve themselves almost everywhere, which in addition to causing a health hazard can create some nasty odors.
While there are many types of rats, the Elk Grove area mostly has the Norway and Roof Rat. Rats can cause major damage in your attic. They like to chew on things and can chew on wires causing electrical shorts and even fires. While there are several methods for removing rats from attics the two most common types are (a) Trapping and (b) Poison.
TREATMENT
Trapping
Trapping is by far the most preferred in most circumstances. Trapping ensures that rats do not die in the attic where they cannot be found. We use two types of trapping methods. The best one is the most aggressive method that removes the rats usually within 1-2 weeks. This consists of closing off any entrances to the building both outside the perimeter of the building and on the roof. Oftentimes, rats climb on trees or sometimes they will crawl straight up a stucco wall to the roof. Roofs usually have several locations that have to be sealed such as vents, flashing, chimneys, and alcoves. Once the home is sealed up, trapping begins within the attic.
Poison
Poison is another method to removing rats from attics. It is usually less expensive but if the infestation is moderate to heavy, there is a good chance that some of the rats will die in the attic and make retrieving them sometimes impossible. They usually will go outside in search of water and then die, but there is no guarantee. If they do die in the attic or walls, the smell can last from 3 to 6 weeks until the carcass decomposes completely.
PREVENTION
You can prevent rats or mice from getting into your home by sealing all entry areas. A rodent can get into a home through a hole the size of a dime. We can inspect your home to show you the areas where they are entering the home. You can also reduce or prevent rodent infestations by reducing easy access to food and water sources. Rats and mice are always searching for food and they are going to take the path of least resistance. Making sure your home does not have easy access to food sources, such as fallen fruit or unpicked fruit or food scraps in a garage can with a broken lid, will go a long way in making your home less attractive to these pests. Roof rats are very common in many areas throughout the area and properly maintaining trees by keeping them trimmed back away from the homes will also make a big difference by reducing easy access. Master Pest Control can also implement proactive treatment methods to keep rodents out of your home or business. All these methods are pet friendly, people friendly and environment friendly.
